PixelLab

Game-ready sprites from a sentence, with PixelLab.

PixelLab's models are made for pixel art. In Pixelart Makers they work on your selection, your frame and your palette, and every result lands as a draft your whole team can see.

PixelLab takes the grunt work at every step. Make, edit, fill, cut out, animate and turn around from where you already are: the canvas, the timeline, the contextual toolbar and ⌘K.

  • Make a sprite

Describe it and get pixel art on a new artboard.

Where: ⌘↵ on an empty canvas · Make sprite in AI mode

  • Edit with prompt

Change a sprite with a sentence. The size stays the same.

Where: Edit with prompt… on a layer or artboard

  • Fill selection

Regenerate just the area you selected.

Where: ✦ Fill selection… above your selection

  • Remove background

Cut out the subject onto transparent pixels.

Where: Remove background on a layer or artboard

  • Animate from here

Turn the current frame into a run of new frames.

Where: ✦ Animate in the timeline

  • Enhance prompt

Turn a few words into a detailed brief.

Where: The wand in a prompt card, with a Sprite engine selected

  • In-betweens

Draw two poses and get the frames between them.

Where: ✦ Animate ▾ with two frames selected

  • Rotate to directions

Turn one pose into four or eight facings.

Where: More ▾ on an artboard · ✦ Animate ▾

  • Erase or isolate an object

Remove a prop and fill in behind it, or lift it onto its own layer.

Where: Select area to erase or isolate… in More ▾

Try new takes on a sprite, each on its own artboard.

Where: ✦ Variations on a selected artboard

Pick the effort for the job. Fast for quick drafts, Balanced for sharper detail, Max for your best sprites. Each option shows what it uses before you run it.

Ask for the angle your game uses. When you make a sprite on Sprite · Fast, choose a side or top-down view and which way it faces.

Retouch a walk cycle instead of drawing it from scratch. Frames arrive right after your pose, on their own layer and under their own tag. Keep them in one step, then retouch frame by frame.

Draw the key poses. Get the frames between. Select two frames and pick In-betweens: PixelLab draws the motion from one pose to the other, and Keep drops the new frames into your layer in one step.

One pose, every direction. Rotate to directions redraws a sprite facing four or eight ways, as new artboards or as tagged frames, ready for a top-down or isometric game.

Clean cut-outs, ready to animate. One click, no prompt. The background turns into transparent pixels, and the draft is yours to keep or discard.

Change a detail, not the whole sprite. Edit a layer with a sentence, or fill only the pixels inside your selection. Everything outside the selection stays exactly as it was.

Edit with prompt

“Give it a red scarf.” The change arrives on a draft layer above the original.

Fill selection

Marquee a gap and say what goes there. Only the pixels inside change.

Every result on your palette. Palette lock snaps PixelLab sprites, edits and fills to your artboard's colours, even a four-colour Game Boy palette.

Get better sprites from fewer words. On a Sprite engine, the wand uses PixelLab's prompt enhancer to turn “slime” into a detailed description. Press Tab to use it.

Big jobs ask first. Max-quality jobs show what they use and ask for a confirmation before they start, because once PixelLab starts a job it finishes it.

You stay the artist. PixelLab does the heavy lifting. You decide what stays.

Drafts, not overwrites

Every result lands on a locked ✦ layer or a new artboard for you to keep or discard.

Estimates up front

Every prompt card shows what it will use from your monthly allowance before you run it.

Everyone sees it

In a shared file, teammates see your job's progress on the canvas, and you decide what stays.

PixelLab questions

What is PixelLab?

PixelLab is an AI made for pixel art. In Pixelart Makers it powers the Sprite engines for Make a sprite, Edit with prompt and Fill selection, plus Remove background, Animate from here, Generate in-betweens, Rotate to directions and the prompt wand on Sprite engines. Variations, Render sketch, Erase and Isolate object, Edit frames and the clean-up actions can run on a Sprite engine too.

Do I need a PixelLab account?

No. Pixelart Makers connects to PixelLab for you, and what you generate comes out of the monthly AI allowance of your Pixelart Makers account.

Can I cancel a PixelLab job?

You can press Cancel, but once PixelLab starts a job it finishes it, so a cancelled job still counts against your monthly AI allowance. That's why Pixelart Makers shows the estimate first and asks before Max-quality jobs.

Does AI use my palette?

Turn on palette lock on the prompt card before you generate, and every sprite, edit, fill and animation frame is matched to your artboard's palette. For art you already have, Restyle to palette snaps it to your colours.

Will AI overwrite my work?

No. Results land as a draft layer or a new artboard, and you keep or discard them. If you leave a draft undecided with the file open, Pixelart Makers keeps it after 10 minutes; set Keep results automatically to Never in Preferences › AI to always decide yourself. One ⌘Z undoes the whole AI step, and a merge is refused if that layer changed in the meantime, so a result never paints over newer strokes.

What's the Illustrative engine?

A second image engine that paints a more illustrative picture. Pixelart Makers then rebuilds it into real pixel art: hard edges, a transparent background, and your colour count or palette.
